The scholarship and collegiality it fosters in its students should lead them, in their later lives, to promote understanding between people and to strive for the betterment of their country and the world. New subjects that were beneficial to the intellectual development of our students were introduced. Enrichment Programmes which are beneficial to students will be conducted during the term or schoolholidays. The fees for these programmes will be collected through the students’ Edusave Accounts orthrough the Inter-bank Giro scheme in May and September. It was the centre of the Chinese Salvation Movement in the region during the war years before the fall of Singapore and they continued to be active in community services and charity work following the end of the war. The Girls’ Brigade Singapore (GBS) is one of the oldest Uniformed Youth Organisations endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Singapore to run a co-curricular activity for Girls in schools. We are a values-driven uniformed group that teaches Girls to lead and serve by example – to put others before self. In the Girls’ Brigade, ‘Servant Leadership’ changes every Girl as she changes the world around her. Community Guiding members will get to participate in GGS’ HQ activities and meet with fellow sister Brownies or Guides beyond their own schools to socialise and engage in meaningful activities within their local communities.

Some of these activities include local and overseas international camps and exchanges. The Community Guiding programme provides a platform for girls from ages 7 to 17 to enjoy the Guiding experience outside of the regular school Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) programme. In Guiding at MG, Guides are empowered through fun and challenging programmes,and unique experiences, adventures and activities. The CCA offer opportunitiesfor girls to get involved in different communities, equipping them to makea lasting positive impact by helping others.

There has been a revival of all-boys middle schools in the United States, where schools claim that their curriculum is better tailored to boys’ developmental needs. Many schools formed between the 19th century and first half of the 20th century were set up by missionary bodies, charitable bodies and various community leaders. Like the mui tsai, they had been entrusted by their parents in China to the care of distant relatives in Singapore, the so-called “third or sixth paternal aunt” – sum gu orluk gu – some of whom worked in or even owned entertainment establishments themselves. The pipa tsai could also have been picked out when these “aunts” visited destitute women and their young daughters living in shelters such as temples. The quota was rescinded in 2002, after the Ministry of Health determined that the gap in dropout rates between male and female medical undergraduates had narrowed, and that Singapore was facing a shortage of doctors due to an expanding population.
